The many hours spent by Virginia Education Association volunteers paid off as Joe Biden earned Virginians’ votes and a raft of supported Congressional contenders won their races.
In the race for the White House, Virginia was called early for Joe Biden, who had earned the recommendation of the National Education Association’s Fund for Children and Public Education and who benefited from VEA members who put in numerous volunteer shifts encouraging absentee voting and support for endorsed candidates.
“Virginia made the right choice,” said VEA President James J. Fedderman. “Joe Biden and Kamala Harris know that top-notch public education is absolutely critical to our families, communities, and nation, and they stand ready to support our students and educators.”
Fedderman also hailed the re-election of Sen. Mark Warner, who was also backed by NEA/VEA: “He’s a longtime friend of our schools and a great advocate for public education. We look forward to continuing to work closely with Senator Warner.”
Other election winners who were recommended by VEA/NEA:
NEA-recommended candidate Abigail Spanberger is locked in a tight race in CD7 and remains a prospective win for public schools.
Fedderman praised the smooth process of early and absentee voting, expanded in Virginia this year, and a drama-free Election Day at Virginia polls. He urged all Americans to give local election officials time to complete their ballot counting in the presidential election.
“Voters have done their job, and now we need to let the process carry forward,” he said. “Every voice must be heard and every voice counted. Candidates do not decide who has won—the voters do. So we need to be patient and support the process, which has worked successfully for past elections.”
According to the Economic Policy Institute, teachers in Virginia earn 67 cents on the dollar compared to other (non-teacher) college-educated workers. Virginia’s teacher wage penalty is the worst in the nation.
