Carol Bauer, president of the Virginia Education Association, issued this statement today about Linda McMahon, nominee for Secretary of Education:
Public education is the bedrock of our democracy, the ticket to opportunity that all young Americans need and deserve. What they do not deserve is a person who is wholly unqualified to serve as our country’s Secretary of Education.
Linda McMahon has no background in public schools and no business running the U.S. Department of Education. She made a fortune in the world of professional wrestling, where outcomes don’t matter and are predetermined. The outcomes in our public schools matter tremendously, and we’ve fought for years to ensure that they’re not predetermined by factors such as zip code, economic status, and race. Ms. McMahon is not even close to being the person we need to grapple with the weighty issues facing public education.
Educators, families, and communities must stand up in opposition to this nomination.
The average pay of Virginia public school teachers in 2023-24 was $65,830. That is $4,260 below the national average of $70,090.
