VEA President James J. Fedderman made the following statement today regarding Senate Bill 739:
The science is clear that proper masking is the single most effective COVID mitigation strategy for students and educators in classrooms where social distancing is not possible. The amendment to SB 739 would completely subvert local control and the ability of school boards to protect the health and safety of students and staff. While other states are moving away from strict mask mandates, they all stress the need for the decision to be made at the local level. The Virginia Education Association continues to advise all educators to continue to wear masks, regardless of vaccination status, for the safety of everyone in the classroom. VEA stands with staff, students, and parents all over the Commonwealth in their concern for protecting health and safety within our schools so that in-person instruction can continue uninterrupted.
According to a poll conducted by Virginia Commonwealth University, 66% of Virginians say public schools do not have enough funding to meet their needs.
