VEA on SOL Test Results: Students Learn Best in Classrooms

VEA President James J. Fedderman made these comments upon the release of 2020-21 SOL scores.
The SOL scores released today are disappointing but confirm that students learn best in classrooms with their teachers.
The COVID pandemic forced everyone involved in education—students, their parents and families, and educators alike—to work together to minimize the spread of this deadly virus. We will continue to be child-driven, and we must remain data-informed to address the inequities that existed before the pandemic.
VEA’s 40,000 members went above the call of duty over the past 18 months. They delivered instruction creatively and tirelessly, and we are now on the road to recovery. Virginia’s educators remain committed to students, parents, and family members for a new school year that includes new and meaningful learning opportunities for students and professional development for staff.
The more than 40,000 members of the Virginia Education Association believe that every child deserves a great public school.
According to the Economic Policy Institute, teachers in Virginia earn 67 cents on the dollar compared to other (non-teacher) college-educated workers. Virginia’s teacher wage penalty is the worst in the nation.
