VEA President Jim Livingston Reacts to Governor Northam’s Budget Proposals for K-12 Education

This past week, Governor Northam announced his proposed budget for K-12 education.
Given the scope of the challenges facing our public schools, we needed a budget that was bold.
We didn’t get that.
Credit the Governor with including additional funding in the budget to help at risk students and hire additional school counselors. But as a whole, the budget falls far short of what our public schools need, and what our students and educators deserve.
The VEA is asking for the full funding of K-12 called for by the Virginia Board of Education, and we propose a 5% pay increase in both years of the budget.
Are you ready to join with your colleagues in the fight to fund our students and demand the pay we know we’re worth?
RSVP now to come to VEA’s ‘Fund Our Future’ Rally on Monday, January 27, in Richmond.
It’s going to take all of us to make the real changes necessary to properly fund our schools, and raise teacher pay to the national average.
According to a poll conducted by Virginia Commonwealth University, 66% of Virginians say public schools do not have enough funding to meet their needs.
