Every year, our colleagues at Arts Education Partnership scan state statute and code for policies that affect arts education and compile their findings into easy-to-use tools.
State leaders can review a two-page summary of state policies related to K-12 arts education, explore arts education policies in specific states and compare policies across all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the Department of Defense Education Activity.
The work of the Department of Teaching and Learning extends out of headquarters and works directly with members. This month, we will be featuring our Jumpstart Facilitator:
Name: Sherry Harrell
Local: Virginia Beach
Role(s) that you have completed with VEA:
Jump Start Facilitator, Jump Start Coordinator, and Content Creator
# of years in education: 26
# of years in VEA: 3
How has being a union member helped you?
Being a member of the VEA has provided me with opportunities to work with some of the best teachers across the state of Virginia. I have been able to collaborate with teachers across grade levels and disciplines in order to create and deliver several National Board support systems. Through the Jump Start program, I have been able to develop connections with initial candidates as well as guide them through their first tour of the certification process. Being a member of the VEA has opened up content development and leadership opportunities outside of my school division.
If you could give 1 piece of advice to someone in education, what would it be?
The work we do as educators is challenging and, most often, difficult. I would advise anyone in education to find his or her trusted group of professionals that will support him or her through these challenges. A group of colleagues that will cheer them on and not only bring them chocolates when needed, but will also roll up their sleeves and get down to business right beside them. These are like-minded people who want to grow and learn in order to meet the needs of their students and provide quality learning experiences for all learners.
Teacher shortages are a serious issue across the country. Here in Virginia, there are currently over 3,648 unfilled teaching positions. (FY23)
