The following statement is from Dr. James J. Fedderman, President of the Virginia Education Association in response to the passing of U.S. Representative Donald McEachin:
I was fortunate to have known Congressman Don McEachin and his family very well. He was a passionate voice on many issues, not the least of which was his enthusiastic support for Virginia’s public school students. While a member of the House of Delegates, and later in the state Senate, he always tried to advance the common good in the positions he took. And his trailblazing leadership in Congress on issues such as racial and social justice, criminal justice reform, environmental protection, and voting rights will not soon be forgotten. His quick wit and quiet confidence will be sorely missed both in Washington and in Richmond. On behalf of VEA, I wish to extend our sincere condolences to his family, and all who knew and loved him.
According to the Economic Policy Institute, teachers in Virginia earn 67 cents on the dollar compared to other (non-teacher) college-educated workers. Virginia’s teacher wage penalty is the worst in the nation.
