Welcome to Teaching and Learning TODAY. We hope routines have been established and all is running smoothly for you as we get further into the fall season and your best year yet! Teaching and Learning has many opportunities for growth to offer, but we also invite you to be a part of the change that needs to happen. Monitor this newsletter regularly and respond to those areas that interest you. We facilitate the development of professional learning by members, for members. Allow us to assist you to learn, grow professionally, and impact others!
VEA offers support for National Board candidates seeking initial certification or maintenance of certification. Our NBCT Professional Learning Facilitators (PLFs) serve as 1:1 mentors and lead small group cohorts. If you would like to request candidate support for the 2022-23 National Board Certification cycle, please submit this form to indicate your needs.
We are looking for National Board Certified Teachers to fill a variety of roles as we advocate for National Board Certification in Virginia and support National Board Candidates. We will begin the process of pairing candidates with mentors and forming small group cohorts in August and are seeking Professional Learning Facilitators (PLFs) to serve as mentors and cohort facilitators. As we work to inform our local and state decision makers, we are also looking for NBCTs who would be willing to share their story with our affiliate members, parents, policy makers, and other stakeholders. To ask questions or get involved, contact Dr. Amy Brown, our Professional Practice & Policy Teaching Fellow at akbrown@veanea.org or complete this this brief form to tell us about your areas of interest.
Our NBPTS Affiliate Network partner in southeastern Virginia will host its fall conference at Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday, October 22. Programming includes support for National Board candidates and the VEA and SEVA are collaborating to offer training for current NBCTs interested in mentoring candidates. Completing this Professional Learning Facilitator training may satisfy the VEA’s training requirement for becoming a candidate support provider through our union. For more information on the conference, visit the SEVA NBCT Regional Network website.
Our NBPTS Affiliate Network partner, the Virginia NBCT Network, will host its annual NBCT Summit on Saturday, November 5 at Virginia State University. Programming includes support for candidates, training for NBCTs interested in mentoring candidates, and a keynote address by NBPTS President & CEO Peggy Brookins. Learn more and register here.
In further understanding how trauma can affect the lives of our students, we must be reminded that for many, it can be challenging to move on. This month, we are sharing an article that speaks to the challenge of moving on as seen through the eyes of several who have been affected by the school shooting in Uvalde. If you could give 1 piece of advice to someone in education, what would it be? Please take care of your health and do not overwork. Your family can never replace you.
